More on the 10 Commandments...

Who were the 10 commandments written for, and are Christians today supposed to be trying to live according to them?

We are not under the 10 commandments, God wrote them to Israel. God brought Israel out of Egypt and gave them His Law...

Deuteronomy 6:23-25
And he brought us [Moses and the rest of the children of Israel] out from thence, that he might bring us in, to give us the land which he sware unto our fathers [Abraham, Isaac and Jacob (aka,Israel)].  And the LORD commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear the LORD our God, for our good always, that he might preserve us alive, as it is at this day.   And it shall be our righteousness, if we observe to do all these commandments before the LORD our God, as he hath commanded us.

God gave His Law to Israel, and not to any other nation…

Psalm 147:20
He hath not dealt so with any nation: and as for his judgments, they have not known them. Praise ye the LORD.

The gentiles do not have the Law of Moses…

Romans 2:14
For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves:

We gentiles are not under the Law, but under God's Grace…

Romans 6:14
For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

We are dead to the Law of Moses because we are in the Body of Christ…

Romans 7:4
Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.

We are not justified by God by the works of the Law of Moses…

Galatians 2:16
Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.

Those who are under the Law of Moses are under God's curse...

Galatians 3:10
For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.

Paul is saying in these verses that the Law of Moses (the 10 commandments) is not for us.

The real problem if a person cannot see/understand these verses is the fact that they are lost! They cannot understand the Word of God because they need to get saved first. They are trusting their own righteousness before God.  And, because they are not perfect, they do not please God and are on their way to hell.

Therefore, make the real issue with them salvation. Ask this:

If you were was to die today, where would you spend eternity? In heaven or hell?

Let them know that they have to be perfect to get into God's heaven.  And if they are not perfect, let them know that is why Christ came to die for their sins—because they cannot please God on their own.

Show them…that Christ died for their sins.

 1 Corinthians 15:3-4
For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;  And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures

Then show them… not by our own works are we saved.

 Titus 3:5
Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

Share all these verses and look them up together.

Hopefully this helps!
