Letter sent to the reporter in response to her article on religion…
I read your article about the atheist scientist and thought you did a great job covering his beliefs. The one thing that I noticed that both you and he did in the article is lump all faiths as "religion." My faith is not a "religion." I am a Christian, and Christianity is different from the religions of Roman Catholicism, Islam, Jehovah Witnesses, Judaism, or any other religion, in that we do not work to bind ourselves back to God by our own merit as do all other religions. The word religion means to "bind again, or bind oneself back to God", but that is not what the true Christian faith teaches!
The Bible's definition of a Christian is someone who has a personal relationship with the living and true God of the universe, the God of the Holy Bible, through his Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. A true Christian is someone who has placed their faith and trust in the Son of God, Jesus Christ, which means that they believe that he died on the cross to pay for their sins.
In the bible, God says that a sinner deserves to go to hell because they are not perfect, and God demands perfection. A Christian also believes what the bible says, that Christ was buried and rose again the third day! That's why he sent his perfect Son to earth....to die for the sins of mankind...that's how much he loves us!
Romans 5:8
But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
It is by faith and faith alone in Christ, not religion, that a man is made right with God today. I too am against religion, and all religion today is superstition; but science does not have all the answers either! The so-called "theory of evolution" or the "brilliant and beautiful explanation of our origin in evolutionary science" as the atheist calls it, takes even more blind faith to believe because it has never been proven or reproduced in a science laboratory...thus it is still a theory...a fact that neither you nor "Darwin's Rottweiler" brought up in your article. "Evolutionary Science" (which is still a theory) is just as must a religion to those who believe it, as all the rest of religions!
To believe that life started with a "big bang" takes more faith than to believe the first verse of the bible:
Genesis 1:1
In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
No, the theory of evolution does not explain where that initial energy came from that started it all. Plus, there are many more laws and rules of science (like the rate that our sun is losing its energy, etc.,) that would make it impossible for the theory of evolution to be even remotely true.
I and other "ignoramuses" would like to hear the atheist scientist explain how a theory of our beginnings coming from nothing is more logical to believe, than with a God, although even today with all our advanced technology, science cannot reproduce it.
Another question to you and the atheist (because you did not bring it up in your article) is this: Has he ever studied out and examined the bible fully for himself to see if it is the supernatural holy book from God as it claims to be?
1 Thessalonians 2:13
For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.
If not, how can he know for sure that it isn't?
As a Christian, I have faith—which is not blind faith. The evidence is trustworthy—an honest study will prove that out. I am writing to let you and the atheist that you interviewed know that I am available to answer any questions that you have about the true Christian faith.
I am also here to explain why I disagree with him, Greg Boyd and Michael Joncas, the so-called clergymen that you quoted in your piece, as well. If you truly want answers about the difference between atheism, religion and true Christianity, I look forward to hearing back from you.
By the way, in your interview, the atheist also mentioned about religion being lucrative, and he is right. But, Christianity—and those who make a "religion" out of it—should NOT take "tithes" of their people. Tithing was an agricultural command by God to the Nation of Israel in time past, and is not a part of Christianity today! Today, freewill offerings are the basis of Christian giving.
You may publish this if you want. I can edit it down if you wish. But most of all, I want you to be fair and show another side of this debate.
Thanks...Pastor Ron.
