Speak your 'mountain' away

I've got a question concerning Mark 11:23. For the past 13 years, I've attended a so-called "Faith" church. Mark 11:23 was always referenced to as a place where the "mountain" is an obstacle in our life. The scripture says the word "say" in three different places. This is why my old church would put great emphasis on what we say, that our words are words of death or life. We were taught we could speak to our mountains and they would be cast into the sea. 

We've had guest speakers that basically were associated with this verse of scripture—they’ve written books, tapes, etc., on the subject.

(I must say, this transition to learning the grace message can be a bit challenging at times.)

Before I give you my understanding on Mark 11:23, let me first offer you some words of encouragement...

As long as you continue on in Paul's grace doctrine and patiently allow the Lord to clear up the confusion from what you were previously taught, you will be alright.

Colossians 1:9

For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;

Just give "right division" as much of a chance as you gave other things in the past, and I will bet that you will not be disappointed; but you will be blessed! It will take time to "unlearn" all that other stuff and to "renew your minds" with Pauline grace sound doctrine, but the Lord will do it.

Ephesians 4:22-24

That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

2 Timothy 2:7

Consider what I [Paul] say; and the Lord [will] give thee understanding in all things.

Now then, my thoughts your referenced portion of scripture…

First off, notice the context of the Lord's words! He is saying that whatever Israel asks the Father in his name they will get—no ‘if, ands, buts, maybe, wait, or hold on a minute!’ etc. We all know that that does not work for us today. Because we have all asked God for things in prayer, “in Christ’s name” and have not gotten them.

Mark 11:23-26

For verily I say unto you [Israel], That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith. Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them. And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses. But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.

But notice also, in the passage that their prayer was one of daily forgiveness—if they did not forgive others, neither would God forgive their sins; that was the Law! Law = works, aka performance-based acceptance system!  That's the opposite from today in the dispensation of the grace of God!

Ephesians 2:9

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.

We do not have to pray that today. All we do is thank God daily for already forgiving us in Christ!!  Grace is God's forgiveness poured out freely because of Calvary. Even if we chose not to forgive others as saints today, God still has already forgiven us if we trust in Christ.

So, Mark 11 is written to Israel about how God deals with them!

Now what about those "mountains" of Mark 11? Well, first of all, the reason that you were taught that the "mountains" of Mark 11 were "obstacles" in your life and all that, was because the people teaching you that have no clue what they are talking about.  [That may sound harsh, but what saith the scriptures?]

Romans 3:4

God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged.

In First Timothy, our Apostle Paul says that those teachers who do not rightly divide the scriptures, end up mixing law and grace, thereby confusing themselves and you; and therefore need to cover themselves by "spiritualizing" the passage.

1 Timothy 1:17; 6:3-5

Desiring to be teachers of the law; understanding neither what they say, nor whereof they affirm.

If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness; he is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings, Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.

[God does not mince His words! He means what He says and says what He means!]

If preachers don't teach the bible the way that Paul tells us to—rightly dividing—then scripture tells us to not listen to them!

                      

1 Corinthians 14:37

If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I [Paul] write unto you are the commandments of the Lord.

Romans 16:17

Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.

The "Word of Faith" ministers do not listen to Paul, nor do they rightly divide; therefore they have to spiritualize the passage. They make the literal mountain that the Lord is talking about in Mark into your "obstacle" etc., and that has nothing to do with what the Lord is referring too. In fact, the Lord is not even speaking to us today there, He is speaking to Jews who will go thru the Tribulation period.

All that to say:  your words don't affect your life the way that they claim—that is, if you are sick, just keep saying "By His stripes I'm healed, by His stripes I'm healed, By His stripes I'm healed." That is just wishful thinking that borders on superstition, and the Lord never told His Jewish followers to do that. They never had to keep saying things like that...they just asked God to heal them, and He healed them instantly, without delay, right away, for good! Why? Because He promised Israel this healing (by the way, it is both spiritual healing of all sins and physical healing of all sicknesses and diseases) as a sign of the kingdom.

Isaiah 33:24

And the inhabitant shall not say, I am sick: the people that dwell therein shall be forgiven their iniquity.

That's why the Lord said...

Matthew 9:2-8

And, behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed: and Jesus seeing their faith said unto the sick of the palsy; Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee. And, behold, certain of the scribes said within themselves, This man blasphemeth. And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts? For whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and walk? But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (then saith he to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house. And he arose, and departed to his house. But when the multitudes saw it, they marvelled, and glorified God, which had given such power unto men.

That's why James tells Israel…

James 5:14-15

Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.

Notice that in every reference verse dealing with God's kingdom program with the Nation of Israel, that healings were associated with forgiveness of sins and vice versa.  That is not(!) the way God deals with us today as gentiles in the dispensation of the grace of God.

We get forgiveness of sins thru trusting Christ's shed blood and God may leave us sick...

1 Timothy 5:23; 2 Timothy 4:20

Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thine often infirmities.

Erastus abode at Corinth: but Trophimus have I left at Miletum sick.

Unlike with Israel where when someone trusted Christ, God would not only give them forgiveness of sins, but would also(!) heal their bodies if they were sick.  Today, in the dispensation of grace, these two faithful men of God (Timothy and Erastus) were saved, but both remained sick because God did not promise them that provision.

Israel is a physical, earthly people; therefore their blessings are primarily physical: health, wealth, prosperity—the very things that the word of faith and the name-it-and-claim-it, prosperity people claim God is doing today.

But the Body of Christ is a spiritual entity, therefore our blessings are almost entirely spiritual (although God does provide also for our physical needs if we do things His way), with our healing program coming at the rapture.

Ephesians 1:3; Colossians 2:10

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: ...
And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:

Who the fool is

Who is the following passage referring to?  Are they the same rebels at the Tower of Babel whom God gave up in Romans 1:18-34?

Psalm 14:1-3

The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.  The LORD looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God.  They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one.

Although it may be applied to those gentiles at the Tower of Babel in Genesis 11 (who definitely rebelled against the knowledge of the True and Living God that they had to go after idols), the direct interpretation of the verse is to both unbelieving Jew and Gentile because the Holy Ghost tells that to us through our Apostle Paul!

In Romans chapter 3, our Apostle actually quotes the passage in reference to how God saw the entire world of humanity at the time of Israel's fall.

Romans 3:9-12

What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin; As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.

In the context, our Apostle is demonstrating particularly to the Jews why God was more than just to condemn them along with the gentiles because of their unbelief!

Notice what Paul says in verse 9: What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin;

Therefore, the "we" in the passage are the Jews, and the "they" are the Gentiles. So at the fall of Israel, both Jew and Gentile fulfill those verses from Psalm 14.

Psalm 53:1

The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. Corrupt are they, and have done abominable iniquity: there is none that doeth good.

Romans 1:21

Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

Unclean spirits

What do you think this passage of scripture is talking about?

Matthew 12:43-45

When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none.  Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished.  Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation.

Like every passage of scripture, the context of these verses is very important in explaining it. So what is the context? The context of these verses has to do with the Lord Jesus Christ preaching/teaching/showing Israel that the judgment of God, as well as the Kingdom of God was at hand. And he does this by casting out devils, aka unclean spirits. All of this is important to understand these verses.

Matthew 12:22-28

Then was brought unto him one possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb: and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw. And all the people were amazed, and said, Is not this the son of David? But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils. And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation: and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand: And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; how shall then his kingdom stand? And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your children cast them out? therefore they shall be your judges. But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you.

Notice that in the context of our verses, our Lord is casting out devils; and by doing this, he is showing Israel God's judgment on Satan and the unbeliever in Israel—and that God's kingdom is in their midst by virtue of his presence! That is why he brings up the issue of "judgment" in the verses that follow after (verses 29-42).

So by casting out these devils/unclean spirits, our Lord is asserting his authority in Israel, while at the same time diminishing Satan's. And that is where the verses that you asked me about come in. Our Lord goes on to give us information (for doctrinal reasons to and about Israel) about what happens when he cast out one of these devils.

Matthew 12:43-45

Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out: and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished. Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation.

Evidently, these devils require some type of flesh (a physical body of some kind) in order to manifest their presence in this world. That is why so many people in Israel were possessed with devils, as well as why so many devils were resident in even a single person (Legion, etc.). We were already introduced to this truth earlier in the book...

Matthew 8:28-32

And when he was come to the other side into the country of the Gergesenes, there met him two possessed with devils, coming out of the tombs, exceeding fierce, so that no man might pass by that way. And, behold, they cried out, saying, What have we to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God? art thou come hither to torment us before the time? And there was a good way off from them an herd of many swine feeding. So the devils besought him, saying, If thou cast us out, suffer us to go away into the herd of swine. And he said unto them, Go. And when they were come out, they went into the herd of swine: and, behold, the whole herd of swine ran violently down a steep place into the sea, and perished in the waters.

Here we see that the devils asked him to allow them to go into the swine—that is, to manifest themselves in their flesh.

Anyway, back to our text…

Matthew 12:43-45

When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none. Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out: and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished. Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation.

We see that once cast out of a man, they go about seeking "rest" in some type of "house." And it is also evident that these unclean spirits (they are called unclean spirits in opposition to God's holy spirit), although they can go into animals, would prefer to inhabit humans, in order to talk, do things, etc. So in this case, our Lord says that this devil is looking for another human vessel and findeth no other "host" body. He then turns back again to check out the body that he is familiar with—his old one; and once there, he sees that although it had been "swept and garnished" (by God's Word), it was still "empty." That is, although the person had the devil cast out of him, he did not continue in God's Word! Look at how He starts the very next chapter.

Matthew 13:3-9

And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow: And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up: Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth: And when the sun was up, they were scorched: and because they had no root, they withered away. And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them: But other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.

Meaning…

Matthew 13:18-23

Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower. When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side. But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon [immediately] with joy receiveth it; Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth [remained] for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended. He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful. But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.

So we see that this man in whom the devil was cast out, did not continue in his word, and therefore, the devil was able to come back to this “empty house” and inhabit him again, but this time he brings seven other, more wicked devils with him!

Matthew 12:43-45

 When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none. Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out: and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished. Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation.

Thus the last state of this man was worse than before! So it will be for this wicked generation. This is all a picture and type/shadow of the nation of Israel during the seven years of the Tribulation period (that's why he said seven spirits). Israel will receive a clear testimony of Jesus Christ, and some Jews will believe. But many of those that believe will not "endure [in the way] to the end" and will eventually fall away [by the way side] and leave him and go unto the Anti-Christ, taking his mark!

Hebrews 6:4-8

For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame. For the earth which drinketh in the rain that cometh oft upon it, and bringeth forth herbs meet for them by whom it is dressed, receiveth blessing from God: But that which beareth thorns and briers is rejected, and is nigh unto cursing; whose end is to be burned.

Hebrews 10:26-31

For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries. He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people. It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

Hebrews 10:39

But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.

2 Peter 2:14-22

Having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin; beguiling unstable souls: an heart they have exercised with covetous practices; cursed children: Which have forsaken the right way, and are gone astray, following the way of Balaam the son of Bosor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness; But was rebuked for his iniquity: the dumb ass speaking with man's voice forbad the madness of the prophet. These are wells without water, clouds that are carried with a tempest; to whom the mist of darkness is reserved for ever. For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that were clean escaped from them who live in error. While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage. For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning. For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them. But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again: and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.

1 John 5:16

If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it.

John 6:66

From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.

John 6:67-69

Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away? Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life. And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.

On a different playing field

Where does it show that the Gentiles and those Jews who believed in Jesus during the Grace Dispensation will be in the Kingdom on a different level, without the law and sacrifices?

First of all, the Jews and Gentiles of this present dispensation of the Grace of God will not be in the kingdom of God on this earth! That is a promise God made to Israel in his prophecy program with that Nation of people; but, we (Gentiles and Jews) today are part of God's Mystery program, and are part of His heavenly kingdom!

2 Timothy 4:18

And the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work, and will preserve me unto his heavenly kingdom: to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

The very first verse of the bible explains this! There are two spheres to God's kingdom!

Genesis 1:1

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

And Paul our Apostle gives us even more light!

Colossians 1:16

For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:

(Just a side note: this question can be easily explained simply by understanding the message and ministry of our Apostle Paul—God's spokesman for today. And although it is nice to read Ezekiel and try to understand it, you will never understand it—or any other book of Prophecy—without first listening to God's Apostle to you, our Apostle Paul!

2 Timothy 2:7

Consider what I [Paul] say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things.

So what you may want to do first is read Paul's 13 epistles through about 100 times or so, hen tackle other books of the bible. When you do, those prophecy books will be much easier to understand!

2 Peter 3:15-16

And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you; As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.

Ephesians 3:1-5

For this cause I Paul, the prisoner of Jesus Christ for you Gentiles, If ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to you-ward: How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words, Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ)  Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit;)

Now then, on to your question…

In Prophecy, as you see in the book of Ezekiel, all those on the earth will worship Christ according to that Law!

Isaiah 2:1-3; 66:23

The word that Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem.  And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the LORD'S house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it.  And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.

And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the LORD.

Matthew 28:19-20

Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

This applies also to Israel, although God will cause them to do it!

Jeremiah 31:31-34

Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD: But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.

Ezekiel 36:24-28

For I will take you from among the heathen, and gather you out of all countries, and will bring you into your own land. Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you. A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them. And ye shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; and ye shall be my people, and I will be your God.

So the "law and the sacrifices" will continue for those on the earth; but we, be not of this earth! The Jews and Gentiles in the church the Body of Christ are for the heavenly places!

Ephesians 1:3; 2:6

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:

And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:

Philippians 3:20

For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:

1 Corinthians 15:49

And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly.

So we today are a part of what God is doing in the heavenly places, and will not be a part of what He will do on the earth! That is Israel's calling.

Exodus 19:5-6

Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people [in the nations]: for all the earth is mine: And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.

Revelation 5:10

And hast made us [Israel] unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.

You MUST rightly divide this issue, like everything in the bible, in order to understand it and not be confused!

We, today, have right now in Christ, what the people on the earth will be learning through the "law and sacrifices." That is why listening to Paul is of vital importance!

Colossians 2:16-17

 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days: Which are a shadow of things to come [in that earthly kingdom]; but the body is of Christ.

We today, have it now! We are fulfilled in Christ, by God's Grace!
