Outline of Hebrews

The book of Hebrews explains what Christ’s death at Calvary meant for the Hebrew people; that is why there is so much focus on the blood of Christ.

Hebrews 13:20-21
Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant,  Make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is wellpleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

 +++

In Chapter 1, Messiah is greater than the angels.

Hebrews 1:4-6
Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son?  And again, when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him.

In Chapter 2. he is the Son of man, the Son of Abraham – the Hebrew Messiah.

Hebrews 2:6-7, 16-17
But one in a certain place testified, saying, What is man, that thou art mindful of him? or the son of man that thou visitest him?  Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that he put all in subjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him. But now we see not yet all things put under him.

For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham.  Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.

In Chapter 3, Christ Jesus is greater than Moses.

Hebrews 3:1-4
Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus; Who was faithful to him that appointed him, as also Moses was faithful in all his house. For this man was counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as he who hath builded the house hath more honour than the house.  For every house is builded by some man; but he that built all things is God.

Chapter 4 encourages godly fear and hard work to enter into the Kingdom.  Don’t reject the Word; but by faith enter into his rest.

Hebrews 4:1-2, 7, 11
Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.  For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.

Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, Today, after so long a time; as it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts.

Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.

Chapters 5-7 talk about the new priesthood after the order of Melchisedec, which is not the Levitical priesthood that ended with death.  This is one that is new and fresh and lives forever.

Hebrews 5:6, 10
As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec

Called of God an high priest after the order of Melchisedec.

Hebrews 7:3, 8, 11, 23-25
Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually

And here men that die receive tithes; but there he receiveth them, of whom it is witnessed that he liveth.

If therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood, (for under it the people received the law,) what further need was there that another priest should rise after the order of Melchisedec, and not be called after the order of Aaron?

And they truly were many priests, because they were not suffered to continue by reason of death:  But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood. Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.

Chapters 8-10 talk about the New Covenant in his blood.

Hebrews 8:6
But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.

Hebrews 9:15, 25-26
And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.

Nor yet that he should offer himself often, as the high priest entereth into the holy place every year with blood of others; For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.

Hebrews 10:10, 12
By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down on the right hand of God;

Chapters 11-13 are all about enduring suffering.

Hebrews 11:25-26, 35b-38a
Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season; Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward…

…and others were tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection: And others had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment:  They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented; (Of whom the world was not worthy:)…

Hebrews 12:2, 5, 11
Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him:

Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.

Hebrews 13:3, 6
Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them; and them which suffer adversity, as being yourselves also in the body.

So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.
