Questions for the aetheist...

We've been invited to have dinner with an atheist professor of philosophy and want to tell him about salvation, God, etc.  Any pointers/strategies?

Yes, trust God's Word! It is the Sword of the Spirit.

Ephesians 6:17
And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

Hebrews 4:12
For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

And because a fool does not believe it will cut him, doesn't mean that it won't!

Psalm 14:1
The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.

Romans 1:22
Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,

God says it will cut, so believe Him and use His sword to pierce those hearts.

Romans 3:4
God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged.

Paul said that men will try to overthrow your trust in God's Word through their philosophy..

Colossians 2:8
Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.

He also said that they would try to use science also…

1 Timothy 6:20
O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called:

So what you do is let them know that even though they don't believe the bible, would they do you a small favor and read some verse to/with you? Have them read it with their own mouths!!! If they won't discuss these verses...don't deal with them!

Tell them that God is a god that likes to reason…

Isaiah 1:18
Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

And the verses that you will have them read all will do with scientific evidence!

The earth hangs on nothing.

Job 26:7
He stretcheth out the north over the empty place, and hangeth the earth upon nothing.

Then ask them how did Job have such knowledge 4,000 years ago? Most in antiquity thought that the earth was help up by Atlas or the back of a turtle.

The earth is round and not flat...

Isaiah 40:22
It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in:

How did Isaiah know that 2,700 years ago? Most people, even up to Columbus's day thought that the earth was flat (This verse was the reason Columbus made his voyage without fear of "falling off.")

There are springs underneath the waters of the sea, way down in the bottom...

Genesis 7:11
In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.

Job 38:16
Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea? or hast thou walked in the search of the depth?

Ask them how did Moses and Job know this? There were no deep sea diving submarines in his day. (The answer is also in Job.)

Job 38:1
Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said,

There are mountains underneath the seas.  How did Jonah know this 2,500 years ago?

Jonah 2:6
I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me for ever: yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption, O LORD my God.

These are just a few scientific facts to have them explain from God's Word.

Then after getting him to see that no man could have known these things way back then (without the technology that we have today), tell him that God told these men…

Romans 1:19
Because that which may be known about God is manifest in them, for God hath shewed it to them.

Lastly, have them read this verse:

Revelation 21:8
But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

Ask them where does it say that all liars will end up? And that the person that knew all those other scientific facts in the bible before, is the same one who said that!

Then let them know that that same person died for them so that they would not have to go to hell....

1 Corinthian 15:1-4
Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;  And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

But warn them to believe and not continue in there unbelief like the people in this verse:

Acts 17:18
Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoicks, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection.

Now don't let them get off onto a tangent with their wrangling. Tell them that “that's a good point,” but then bring them right back to God's Word, okay? Keep making the bible the issue. And make them explain how all these Jewish men knew all these scientific facts thousands of years before the best scientific minds "discovered" them. Take this email with you if need be for a reminder! You'll do great. I'm praying for you.

Hopefully this helps...Maranatha!
